Marleau Lecture Series

Please join us on Thursday, December 5, 2019 for the inaugural University of Ottawa Symposium on Economic Policy, made possible through the generous contribution of Hubert Marleau (Chair, Palos Management). The symposium is a one-day event bringing together prominent scholars, business leaders and economists to generate thought-provoking conversations about current issues related to fiscal and monetary policy. This year’s keynote speaker for the Marleau Signature Lecture is renowned economist and distinguished university professor OIivier Blanchard, C. Fred Bergsten Senior Fellow at PIIE, Robert M. Solow Professor of Economics emeritus at MIT and former chief economist at the IMF. In his presentation, Professor Blanchard will discuss why low interest rates make monetary policy less powerful and fiscal policy more powerful as well as assess possible implications of ways the two interact. Agenda • 10:00 a.m. – Academic panel: “Economic Effects of Monetary and Fiscal Policies” • 11:30 a.m. – Marleau Signature Lecture and lunch: “The Interaction of Fiscal and Monetary Policy in Times of Low Interest Rates” • 2:00 p.m. – Policy panel: “Should We Worry about Government Budget Deficits?”
