Join us for a conversation with Ambassadors John Herbs and Daniel Fried to discuss the challenges to democratic states posed by disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, and the manipulation of traditional and new media by domestic and foreign actors. Moderated by CIPS Assistant Direction Professor Alexandra Gheciu, this talk will explore how, and why, these challenges may ultimately threaten the contemporary rules based international order. Focusing on the role played by Russia, we will consider a number of important questions: Do the disinformation campaigns of authoritarian actors represent a novel challenge to Western democratic states? What policy responses are open to Canada, the United States, NATO, and the EU in the face of resurgent challenges to the West? Finally, what resources do democratic states have at their disposal to counter the impact of disinformation campaigns?
