Objectives: To update pediatricians and pediatric sub-specialists on recent developments in the pediatric bone health field that are relevant to pediatric practice, including:
1. Rickets: Presentation of results from a 2015 survey of vitamin D deficiency rickets conducted through the Canadian Pediatric Surveillance Programme, with discussion about how these results impact public health policy and clinical practice for rickets prevention.
2. Osteoporosis: Presentation of guidelines for the management of patients at CHEO with risk factors for osteoporosis due to steroid-treated disorders, including the timing of referral to the pediatric bone health clinic and the role of the pediatrician in the pre-referral, bone health monitoring phase.
3. Novel medications for the treatment of pediatric bone disorders: Denosumab (monoclonal antibody to RANKL for the treatment of osteoporosis), KNR23 (monoclonal antibody to FGF23 for the treatment of FGF23-mediated hypophosphatemic rickets) and Asfotase Alfa (for the treatment of hypophosphatasia).
