What do organizers and activists know and how do they know it? Activism, organizing and social movements can be rich sites of learning, knowledge production and theorizing, and these struggles for change can best be understood if we engage with the intellectual work that goes on within them. This seminar will draw on Aziz Choudry’s new book, Learning Activism: The Intellectual Life of Contemporary Social Movements (University of Toronto Press, 2015).

Abstract    Given any observed demand behavior by means of a demand function, we quantify by how much it departs from rationality. The measure of the gap is the smallest Frobenius norm of the correcting matrix function that would yield a Slutsky matrix with its standard rationality properties (symmetry, singularity, and negative semidefiniteness). A useful classification of departures from rationality is suggested as a result. Errors in comparative statics predictions from assuming rationality are decomposed as the sum of a behavioral

Abstract
This paper uses data from Brazil’s Bolsa Família, the largest conditional cash transfers program in the world, to examine how income transfers that are shielded from the influence of political intermediaries affect local politics in an environment plagued by clientelism and vote buying. The paper exploits a nonparametric multivariate regression discontinuity design and employs a novel identification strategy for the cross-municipal variation in program coverage. Estimates show that transfers trigger a reduction in
