Data Science Group Seminar

English

SPEAKER: Multiple Speakers (Univ. of Ottawa)             ABSTRACT: This seminar will be devoted to a number of brief presentations of open problems which the participants find most interesting.

Sub-title:
Open Problem Session
Date:
Tuesday, 6 October 2015 - 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Event language:

Non-Symmetric Distances

French

Speaker: Tristan Bice, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Salvador, Brazil

Functions satisfying the triangle inequality d(x,y) ≤ d(x,z)+d(z,y), but lacking symmetry d(x,y)=d(y,x), have been studied in various fields like fuzzy logic, category theory, and non-symmetric topology. A number of these also arise naturally in C*-algebras and more general ordered normed spaces. In our talk, we outline their basic theory, showing how they unify aspects of metric and order theory, and give some examples and applications in functional analysis.

Combinatorics and Optimization Seminar

French

Sub-title:
Eulerian properties of hypergraphs and triple systems
Date:
Friday 25 September 2015 à 13 h 00 to à 14 h 00
Event language:

Analysis Seminar

French

SPEAKER: Luiz Cordeiro (University of Ottawa)             ABSTRACT: We will present the Feldman-Moore algebra associated with a measurable dynamical system and describe how properties of the dynamical system are translated to this algebra (and the full group). If time allows, we might discuss some more recent results on the so-called sofic equivalence relations.

Sub-title:
On Borel dynamics and related structures
Date:
Wednesday 23 September 2015 à 13 h 00 to à 14 h 00
