How do you learn all those lines?

Have you ever wondered how an actor does it? Murders her children on stage and then goes home to cuddle her own child? How do actors create intimacy where there is none, kiss someone they loathe, deliver the same joke eight times a week for months? What motivates them to rehearse for long and grueling hours so they can appear spontaneous? How do actors train themselves to face the demands of the profession? Even more puzzlingly, why do they do it at all—and in the face of so much rejection?
