Debwewin: Valuing the Importance of Indigenous Sacred Places

The Algonquin were one of the first Indigenous Nations recorded in Champlain’s journals, yet for some reason their land rights have been continually denied.

The University of Ottawa resides on Unceded Algonquin territory. What does this statement really mean? Situated within the context of reconciliation, and as institutions of higher education, universities in Canada have the moral responsibility to move beyond land recognition statements.

In exploring how parents in Ethiopia know and care for their children with autism, this talk focuses on 'inner disturbance' as a descriptor of children with autism. Ethiopian parents understand their children with autism as not only capable of being deeply emotional but also sensitive to the emotional content in their social surroundings. I explore parents' understanding of this sensitivity through their experiences of caring for their children.

In exploring how parents in Ethiopia know and care for their children with autism, this talk focuses on listening as a behaviour that represents parents' expectations of obedience. In the case of children with autism, this behaviour is lacking, changing what parents expect from and how they care for their children. I explore these evolving expectations and ways of caring through parents' personal experiences.

Recognizing Canada’s 150th celebrations and also the 60th anniversary of the arrival and settlement of 38,000 Hungarian refugees during 1957, this conference uses their example to investigate how government and civil society can work together.
