The paper sheds a new light on the intermediary role of underwriters, by examining how the underwriters handle difficult-to-sell IPOs. It argues that when faced with the potential of losing a deal due to withdrawal, an underwriter might find it optimal to price an offering above what investors would otherwise be willing to pay. But to ensure investor participation, the underwriter would commit to supporting the stock price in the aftermarket.
Radiotherapy centers can improve their efficiency by optimizing the utilization of the linear accelerators. We propose an online method to schedule patients on such machines taking into account their priority, the maximum waiting time, and the preparation of this treatment (dosimetry). We have implemented a genetic algorithm and a constraints program, which schedule the dosimetry. This approach ensures the beginning of the treatment on time and thus avoids the cancellation of treatment sessions.
Today the growing media interest in pregnant celebrities allows for extensive exposure and scrutiny by pregnant women. How pregnant celebrities are portrayed can be a powerful influence and point of reference for women especially in regard to their physical appearance during pregnancy. With pregnancy a key part of the life stage transition into motherhood both positive and negative influences will impact on how women feel about themselves and potentially their developing baby.
