Speaker: Mikko Pakkanen Abstract: The electronification of financial markets worldwide during the past two decades has reshaped the ways financial securities are traded, enabling, in particular, so-called high-frequency trading (HFT), whereby securities can now change hands at time scales shorter than a millisecond. HFT has arguably made markets more efficient, but it has also made them prone to sudden market disruptions and “flash crashes”, due to the complicated feedback loops between HFT algorithms.
Speaker: Dave Campbell (SFU) Abstract: Differential Equation Models offer a succinct way of expressing complex behaviour with few but readily interpretable parameters. The diverse dynamics possible from such a model can result in complex statistical challenges when fitting models to data. Resulting likelihoods can be multimodal and challenging to optimize. Strong non-linearities relating model parameters to the data mean that Delta method variance approximations perform rather poorly.
