Why are women and people of color underrepresented in politics? This talk offers a new explanation: strategic discrimination. Strategic discrimination occurs when an individual discriminates against a candidate out of concern that others will object to the candidate’s identity. Experimental evidence suggests that strategic discrimination is influencing US politics -- including the 2020 Democratic primary. Is the same thing also happening in Canada?
