The faculty will be hosting its fourth Engineering Probability and Statistics Competition this semester, based off of the following courses (only the first half of the course):

  • ELG3126 - Random Signals and Systems
  • MAT2377 – Probability and Statistics for Engineers

These courses are more or less equivalent. It is not necessary to have taken either of those courses to participate in the contest since participants will receive a complete course package to help them prepare.

A ceremony will be held after the contest; dinner and dessert will be served.

The event

An individual closed book exam consisting of three rounds: preliminaries (a one hour quiz), semifinals (a 90 minute test), and a final round (a 3 hour exam). The top 8 students will make it to the final round. The distribution of the prizes is as follows:

  • 1st place: $2000
  • 2nd place: $1000
  • 3rd place: $700
  • 4th to 8th: $100 each
  • 9th to 24th: $50 each

How to Prepare

Students who participate in this contest will each receive a complete package of course notes that cover every topic in the contest. They will also receive a set of sample problems and solutions for each topic and all the exams and solutions from previous years as well. These documents will mostly be available in English. The contest itself however may be available both in French and in English.

Time and Location

All three rounds will take place on campus between November 2nd and November 27th 2018. Each round will be scheduled based off of the availabilities provided by the participating students. The ceremony will take place most likely in March 2019.
