In the UK, the residential sector currently accounts for approximately a third of the energy used and so energy demand reduction in this sector is a key part of our strategy for carbon reduction. However, energy demand reduction has typically been addressed from an engineering perspective, with only recent consideration of the requirements of users and the implications for design. This talk aims to show how information about occupants’ experiences, values and practices relating to residential energy demand reduction can inform an engineering audience and so enhance engineering-focused energy research. A range of evidence drawn from a number of major, multi-disciplinary, UK residential energy research projects undertaken by the author over the past decade.
