Life and Death of Languages

Life and Death of Languages

This talk discusses what it means to be a speaker of a language, challenges current models of fluency and language life/death and the role that linguistics (the formal study of languages) has in language revitalization. This is based on experiences from being both a student and educator of the Tuscarora language -- which has only one remaining L1 speaker, who is currently 93 years old.
