Innocence Ottawa is happy to announce that it’s 5th Annual General Meeting with this year's guest speakers:

Dr. Hassan Diab is a Canadian citizen who lives in Ottawa. Until October 2007, Hassan enjoyed an engaged public life, including teaching as a sociology professor, publishing research, and travelling internationally.

However, beginning in 2008, Hassan was charged with attempted murder and other charges relating to an October 1980 bombing outside a Paris synagogue that killed four passersby and injured dozens more. He was unjustly extradited from Canada to France in November 2014 and was detained in a French jail, deprived of his family and confined to his cell 22 hours a day. The allegations he faced were based on secret intelligence and erroneous handwriting analysis.

Dr. Rania Tfaily is an associated professor in the department of sociology and anthropology at Carleton University. She is the spouse of Mr. Diab and continues to advocate for Mr. Diab’s innocence.

Don Bayne acted as legal counsel for Hassan Diab. Mr. Bayne is a partner with Bayne Sellar Ertel Carter, a criminal law firm in Ottawa. He received his LL.B. from Queen's University, an L.L.M. from the London School of Economics and Political Science and an M.B.A. from Queen's University.

Mr. Bayne has practiced criminal law exclusively for more than 40 years. He has been designated a specialist in criminal litigation by the Law Society and has conducted trial and appellate advocacy at all levels of courts in Canada and at public inquiries (Somalia, Arar, Iacobucci).
