Based on ethnographic research among right to die activists in four countries, this talk will address the complexities and tensions in conceptualizing the provision of death as a form of medical assistance. By examining the perspectives of those actively engaged in this issue, this paper aims to nuance notions of patient autonomy, choice, and rationality that are often seen to form the basis of this right by showing how a medically assisted death implies the mobilization of networks of care, while also examining how a death achieved in a medical context by medical means with medical assistance becomes approximate to a natural death in an already medicalized context.
