Medicine & Humanities International Summer School

July 3 – 12, 2017

10 days of educational and cultural activities related to medicine and that offer humanities-based learning to improve your abilities in critical thinking, observation and history-taking, communication, cultural fluency, community leadership, and social accountability. Topics and techniques include:

  • Narrative Medicine & Literature
  • Visual Thinking Strategies for Physicians
  • Self-Portraiture & Life Drawing
  • Anthropology, Philosophy & History of Medicine
  • Uncertainty in Medical Practice
  • Shared Decision Making with Patients
  • Theatrical Techniques for Healthcare Professionals
  • Bioethics Topics in Film
  • … and surprises!!

Sessions will be taught by an international faculty from all participating universities.

  • 10 students from University of Ottawa, Canada (5 from each language stream)
  • 5 students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China
  • 5 students from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China
  • 10 students from L’Université de Lyon, France

WHY:

  • improve problem-solving, critical thinking & managing uncertainty
  • become a better communicator, leader, physician & colleague
  • earn 40 credits towards the Certificate in Medicine & Humanities
  • receive priority for next year’s Summer School in Lyon or Shanghai

In addition to participating, uOttawa students will act as hosts to our international partners by helping to plan social and cultural activities, building friendships and inter-professional skills!
